Benihana History
Hiroaki Aoki established the American restaurant chain Benihana in New York City in 1964. Its present headquarters are in Aventura, Florida.
In addition to its flagship Benihana Teppanyaki brand, Haru (fusion cuisine), and RA Sushi locations, Benihana owns or franchises 116 Japanese-influenced eateries globally.
The teppanyaki (also known as hibachi) Restaurant Concept, which had developed in Japan in the late 1940s, was brought to the United States by Benihana and eventually spread to other nations.
The Aoki family is the first to appear in Benihana’s history. After World War II, Yunosuke Aoki, a famous Japanese entertainer descended from samurai, started a coffee business in Tokyo.
In honor of the red safflower that Yunosuke discovered in the ruins of the city, the coffee shop was given the name Benihana. Hiroaki, Yunosuke’s son, traveled to the country in 1960 to attend New York University.
He did, however, discontinue his studies after a year in order to work towards his goal of operating a Japanese restaurant in America.
Before amassing enough cash to start his own restaurant, Hiroaki worked as a waiter and a busboy at New York City restaurants. He started the first Benihana restaurant on Manhattan’s West 56th Street in 1964.
Four tables made up the initial Benihana, which was a little eatery. However, because of its original teppanyaki concept, it quickly gained popularity.
In the Japanese cooking method known as teppanyaki, food is cooked on a huge, flat grill right in front of the guests.
The cooks at Benihana were taught to use precise knife skills and to amuse the diners while they cooked.
Benihana achieved immediate success. The restaurant’s ROI was only six months old. Over 20 Benihana restaurants existed in the US by the end of the decade.
The Popularity Of Benihana grew steadily throughout the 1970s and 1980s. The Business Expanded into other markets, including Europe, Canada, and Mexico.
Benihana went public in 1987. Benihana encountered some difficulties throughout the 1990s. A number of lawsuits were filed against the business, and it was also up against rival teppanyaki eateries.
Benihana was able to overcome these difficulties and carry on expanding. Benihana is a Well-Known Restaurant chain with more than 100 locations now.
Rocky Aoki, The Son Of Hiroaki Aoki, is the current owner and manager of the family business. Japanese Cuisine Has become very popular in the US, thanks in large part to Benihana.
Millions of people have been introduced to Japanese cuisine and culture thanks to the company’s teppanyaki idea. Benihana is a real American success story and a monument to the Aoki family’s business zeal.
